May 2017  Iceland Outdoor Adventure Trip!

with Sheryl McGlochlin – May 16 - 25, 2017

Iceland is quickly becoming a favorite destination for outdoor adventure seekers from all over the world!  One tenth of Iceland is home to the largest National Park in Europe. Iceland is all about ice and fire, hot and cold. It is romantic, magical, spiritual and unbelievable. It’s difficult to describe in words and nearly impossible to capture it’s entire presence in a photo. Besides getting to know the locals, you’ll meet people from all over the world, especially from Europe. Iceland is clean, safe, friendly and many people speak English.

With many Scandinavian ancestors from Denmark, another nordic country nearby, Sheryl has developed a true passion for this beautiful country and is eager to help others experience the same feelings.

Included: All lodging accommodations, outdoor activities and adventures as stated in itinerary, meals listed below, ground transportation, English speaking guides, assistance in booking airfare if needed, pre-trip meeting designed to assist participants in planning and preparing for a successful trip.

Not included: Airfare, travel insurance, rental bikes & gear, items of a personal nature, special excursions including geothermal pools, guide tips and gratuities, etc.

May 16 –

Fly from your home to Keflavik, Iceland.

May 17 -

With an overnight flight, we'll arrive in Iceland approx. 6:45 AM.  It's a beautiful site near the ocean! After picking up our rental cars we drive approx. 40 minutes to Reykjavik where we begin a full day of exploring this incredible city on bike and/or on foot.  Highlights include amazing museums, shops, etc. along with a fun easy 7 mile paved bike ride to an historic Lighthouse.  This is our only day to explore this amazing city. In the afternoon enjoy the first of many outdoor geothermal pools, complete with steam rooms, saunas, hot salt water pools, water slides and swimming pools. (B, L, D)

May 18 –

At 7 AM, while the city is still quiet, join us for an early morning sunrise bike ride or walk near the harbor and downtown Reykjavik. This is the best photography opportunities also.  After a delicious breakfast, we’ll leave Reykjavik and travel northeast to spend the day exploring and hiking 1) inside a crater 2) in and around Gullfoss, the largest waterfall in Iceland 3) around the unique geysers that shoot high into the air and 4) the amazing mid-atlantic ridge!  After returning to Reykjavik for dinner, take this last opportunity to explore nearby shops and famous sites or relax under the stars in one last geothermal pool in Reykjavik. (B, L, D)

May 19 – After breakfast, say goodbye to Reykjavik and hello to many stunning waterfalls as we head south along the coast toward Selfoss and Skogar. This morning you’ll have two choices 1) exploring a fascinating geothermal farming town with its many geothermal greenhouses, geothermal bakery, shops and hot pots or 2) hiking on a moderate 6 mile RT trail leading to several geothermal hot pots along the way. Your reward is soaking in a natural hot springs pool before heading back down the mountain. Pack a swim suit and towel on this hike. This trail continues for awhile past the hot springs so keep hiking a little longer if you would rather hike than relax in hot springs.  Each night we spend some time outside looking up into the heavens for a sign of the Northern Lights and brilliant stars. Another geothermal pool opportunity awaits you in the evening after dinner in yet another little town in Iceland. (B, L, D)

May 20 – After breakfast, prepare yourself for one of the most spectacular days of waterfalls!  Some waterfalls we’ll stand at the bottom of, or walk up 350 stairs and stand at the top of, or plan to go inside a short slot canyon with a hidden giant waterfall, or walk in back of a waterfall, or hike past 25 breath-taking waterfalls.  There will be time to explore all of the waterfalls mentioned above!  Enjoy alone time if you like. Hike at a pace you feel comfortable with. Today’s hike will be 8 miles RT but you can always do a shortened version. You’ll discover a waterfall around every turn. Everyone may experience this day on an individual level, hiking a little or a lot. Iceland has over 30 museums to enjoy with the nearby Skogar Museum as one of them.

Relax your muscles in yet another amazing hot geothermal pool under the stars tonight!

(B, L, D)

May 21 – After breakfast, we travel just 3 miles to another scenic valley, canyon and natural geothermal pool surrounded by 25 smaller waterfalls as you relax in a hot pool.  While relaxing in the pool take a few minutes to admire all the waterfalls on the mountain. This hike and natural geothermal pool is near the valley where a large Volcano erupted in 2010.  (B, L, D)

May 22 – After breakfast, we travel east to Vik then northeast to the most amazing scenic glaciers floating on the water!  The Glacier Lagoon and black sand beaches with large, washed-up pieces of ice is quite the site to behold! Walk or jog a few miles along the black sand beach to see how far the ice has washed up on shore. We’ll enjoy a lunch picnic on top of a 200 foot hill to get the best view when the glaciers break apart into the water. Watch for seals swimming in and around the glaciers. Get up close and personal with the floating glaciers by taking a 45 minute boat ride out into the lagoon. (optional)  In the evening, if it's not too late we'll soak in a geothermal pool in Vik. (B, L, D)

May 23 - After breakfast, we travel east to Vik, spend time climbing strange pillars located on a beautiful black sand beach and hiking with more incredible waterfalls, ocean lookout points and amazing views in all directions, located on this most southern tip of Iceland. Vik is also a fun town to explore with local art galleries and artisans selling home crafted items. On the black sand beach is a great place to watch a sunset before we have dinner. Soak in another geothermal pool at Vik. (B, L, D)

May 24 - After breakfast, we head west toward Keflavik stopping along the way in Selfoss to purchase any last minute gifts to bring home, including delicious Icelandic chocolate! Enjoy one last day of geothermal pools and some of the best gelato in Iceland! As we travel back to Keflavik, we’ll stop along the way at a few sites we missed. Before the night is over, we’ll stop at the most famous geothermal pool in all of Iceland, The Blue Lagoon. It’s magical at night under the stars and not crowded! If you like, pamper yourself with a mud facial. (optional) Blue Lagoon mud and facial products are available to purchase as well.  (B, L, D)

May 25 - Say goodbye to this most northern magical land and prepare for an early morning flight back home.
