Help us with harvesting lots of delicious food this week!

Sheryl McGlochlin - Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Thanks for your patience.  I'm back from Florida now.  Just in time to start harvesting a lot of food!

I have updated the GARDEN CALENDAR for the next several weeks.

Take a minute to click on the link above and look at it.  Let me know when you would like to come help us in the gardens and pick up some food.  You'll love this delicious harvest that is ripening quickly!

Remember, we need your help with harvesting this food and/or some light garden maintenance.

If you are also interested in doing a "bagel pickup" from Riches Bagels during the week, let me know. Flexible schedule for picking up the food.  It then needs to come to my home in Holladay, after you have taken what you would like.

Riches Stores located at:

6200 So. Highland Drive

About our 3 "So Jo Gardens"...

as we like to call them:  They are the largest of our 14 gardens and are producing a LOT of crops.
I will be doing weekly "So Jo Garden Blitz Parties" since these 3 gardens need a lot of consistent attention this summer.
As we are able to stay in control of these gardens AND get enough people to help us, we'll send a crew over to work in the West Jordan Garden as well.
Let me know if you'd like to work there.

Millcreek (33rd So.) Garden Work and Harvest Distribution:

Feel free to help Dave, our 33rd South Garden Coordinator, and his crew, EVERY Tuesday and Saturday morning from 8 - 10 am.

Do you have a garden you'd like to work in this week?  Email me and let me know!

You can work any daylight hours Monday - Saturday.

PLEASE Do NOT pick any of the watermelons, cantaloupe and winter squash!!

We will let you know when they are ready.

Learn more about WHEN TO PICK MELONS & PUMPKINS

We are growing Melons and Winter Squash in many of our gardens this year.  I'm trying to get a bunch of signs posted to remind everyone to "DON'T PICK THESE CROPS!"

It's very understandable why people pick these crops since this is what they look like in the grocery store, however, "home-grown" vrs "store-bought" MELONS and WINTER SQUASH are very different!
We'll let you know when we are ready to pick these plants, just keep your eyes open and don't let anyone pick any of these until you hear from me.  We are watching these plants very closely.

Urgent Work in Gardens this week, Tues. - Sat. May 29 - June 2

Sheryl McGlochlin - Tuesday, May 29, 2012
No Garden work in 3300 So. Gardens for a few weeks - these gardens are all planted and being watered

Holladay Gardens -

Urgent work! Contact me if you can help (I have to be gone every morning this week but will be home after 12 noon each day.  If you have worked in the Holladay Gardens before, let me know, since you may be able to work in the morning without me.)

Work to be done:
Till Holladay C & D gardens - Urgent work since the tiller needs to be returned soon
Pick lettuce in the greenhouse
Plant tomatoes in all 4 Holladay Gardens
Pea picking party starts SOON in Holladay B Garden
Minor weeding
Cut garlic and chives

Be a runner this week!

Bricks and rocks (the size of a 1/2 brick) need to be taken to So. Jordan C garden - to hold the black plastic in place so we don't have to weed there at all this summer.  If you have any left over bricks or rocks the size of an adult fist that you can take over and leave inside the BIG gate, closest to Orchard View Dr. entrance to the garden, let me know.

Pick up ALL the plants from West Jordan Garden and take to Garden Headquarters:  Holladay A Garden (plants are located along the east side of the house. These are the plants we received from West Jordan School High School)

One of these flats of tomatoes needs to go to the WVC garden to get planted soon
One flat of tomatoes goes to Riverton garden to get planted
One flat of tomatoes goes to SJ B garden to be planted Thursday night
Help us make sure all of these plants get watered each day due to warmer temperatures this week
We're trying to get them ALL in the ground THIS week!

May 31, Thursday, 6:30 - 8:30 pm:  Chicken Enchilada Dinner, South Jordan B Garden Work Party

Help us with weeding before we finish laying black plastic then get plants in.  We'll do this all in one night. This is another big Blitz night like we had a last week at South Jordan C Garden.  It's awesome when 20 people are working hard and all the work gets done quickly!!  There's plenty to do so please RSVP and come.  I'll bring the dinner!!  Remember:  All of our South Jordan Gardens are the very largest and most demanding until we get them planted.

Online Garden Class - presented March 5, 2012

Sheryl McGlochlin - Tuesday, March 06, 2012

This is a one-hour Garden Class I presented in my Greenhouse that was published nationwide

When can Garden Members who work all day, Monday - Friday work in the Gardens?

Sheryl McGlochlin - Friday, February 24, 2012

A lot of our members work 8 - 5 shifts, Monday - Friday so no worries there.  Once we get into the main garden season (April - October), when there is a lot more light in the evening, we'll offer MANY opportunities to work at night.  Even our greenhouse in Holladay has lights in it, so you can work in there until 10 pm right now if we needed help.  The Gardens are closed on Sunday since all of our gardens belong to private home owners and they have been very generous to let a bunch of strangers work in their gardens Monday - Saturday, so we try to give them at least one day a week without strangers in their backyard.

How to recycle things you thought you had to throw away - Watch this video....

Sheryl McGlochlin - Thursday, February 16, 2012

Besides the items on this video, there are several things we can use in our gardens that you may not want to throw away quite yet.

Don't bring them to me yet, but in the next few weeks I'll show you on this blog what we do with these items.

  • Old newspapers
  • Plastic gallon milk or juice containers (rinsed out)
  • Half Gallon milk containers - plastic or cardboard, (rinsed out)
  • Pint size milk containers - (rinsed out)
  • Dryer Lint - keep stashing it in a gallon size plastic ziplock bag
  • Plastic water bottles
  • 100 % polyester fabric

New potential garden members: Learn more about our organization right now!

Sheryl McGlochlin - Wednesday, January 18, 2012

I am very excited to have you join our Community Garden Group this year and work with you.

I'll be posting more info in this blog during the next few weeks to make sure everyone gets their questions answered.

If you have a question that is not answered in the links below, will you send it to me in an email and I'll post the question and the answer for everyone to see.

During the month of January I have had a very limited amount of time to work on Garden related things since I've been out of town a lot lately and I'm busy producing a lot of garden videos with professional video specialists.

There are plenty of things you can do to learn more about our garden group.

Please take a few minutes, if you would, and go to my website to learn more about our organization.

1)  You'll learn a lot about our group by watching a few recent garden videos we've made at: http://liveandthrive.com/Gardening/Home

2)  If you like what you see, you can register for our garden group on my website homepage, either as a "Working Garden Member" or as a Non-Working Garden Member".

3)  Learn about our garden group from my daily journal garden blogs that I posted throughout the 2011 year.

Our 2012 Garden Season will begin on Saturday, February 4th. We'll start to open all 14 of our gardens one by one starting Feb. 4th.  Some gardens won't be ready to work in until late March, depending on the weather and snow conditions.

Beginning in February, I will start posting daily garden blogs, setting up garden tours, orientation classes, meeting garden supervisors, and announce other garden classes i.e. how to start growing your own food from seed, how to plant peas by President's Day and several other early spring garden chores that will start in February and March.

I need the rest of January to finish producing some garden videos with video specialists.  These videos will be posted on my website and will be made available to our members and potential members, making it much easier for more people to receive info about us and learn about our organization without always having to contact me personally OR come to our Holladay Gardens.

A HUGE Thank you to so many garden members!

Sheryl McGlochlin - Friday, June 17, 2011

We had a GREAT turnout today in both South Jordan Gardens, West Jordan A Garden and Holladay Gardens!

Not just today but for several days we have had LOTS of members all moving this work forward, a one small piece at a time!  It's impressive to watch everything get done by young and old, male and female!  We are like a bunch of little ants that conquer a huge mountain, one small step at a time!

Sad news about one of our garden members....

Sheryl McGlochlin - Thursday, June 09, 2011
We are so sorry to announce that Sarah Mecham's baby passed away.  She has been in our garden group for 2 years now.  She has helped us supervise the Riverton garden until lately.  She's also the grand daughter of Norma, the homeowner of our Riverton Garden.  She was expecting the birth of her new baby daughter in July.  Our prayers and thoughts will be with her and John during this very difficult time.
