Halloween Lasagna Lunch w/ Pumpkin Cake - in exchange for your help loading a truck and trailer Wednesday morning!

West Jordan Garden

9 AM

Wed. Oct. 31

I need extra help loading green plant debris from our South and West Jordan Gardens into a trailer and truck.

This is the last and final garden work this year in our South and West Jordan Gardens.

I realize Halloween is a busy day but it's the only morning we have equipment and vehicles available.

When they are loaded, lunch is served - between 11 and 12 noon.

Once it's loaded, you are done.

Lorell will take it all to the dump.

Help us for whatever time you have available.

RSVP if you are able to come so I bring enough food for lunch.

Come later than 9 AM if necessary.

Bring work gloves and a pitch fork if you have one.

Call me to find out where we are:  801-278-5313

Thank you so much!

ORDER of gardens we'll go to:

  • West Jordan Garden - 2881 W. 7180 So. - Meet here at 9 am
  • South Jordan B Garden - 11131 So. 2865 W.
  • South Jordan C Garden - 9978 So. Redwood Road

Holladay B Garden: Big Priority

Sheryl McGlochlin - Monday, October 15, 2012

I need help working in one section of this garden at a time.

One section is considered a fence post to fence post.  You'll be pulling ALL tomato plants out and any other weeds or plants that may be in that area.

Both sides of the fence need to be completely cleared.

This is in preparation for planting our peas next February.

The ground has to be prepared and ready to go in the fall in order to do grow early spring crops like peas.

If you are able to help us in the Holladay Gardens ANYTIME this week, please let me know!

We would love your help.

This garden needs to be completely cleaned up by Oct. 31 - basically 2 weeks from now.

Thank you SO much for your help!!

RSVP if you are able to help.

Friday, Oct. 5 - South Jordan Gardens, Final day to pick crops before the freeze

Sheryl McGlochlin - Thursday, October 04, 2012

A HUGE thank you

to everyone who has been working so hard this past week, to harvest tomatoes, peppers and squash in our South Jordan Gardens.

Your efforts have been GREATLY appreciated!

In the South Jordan Gardens, we have until Friday evening to harvest the last of our crops in these gardens.  Late Friday night, there's a good chance the temperatures will dip low enough to freeze our crops which makes it officially the end of our growing season IN THE SOUTH JORDAN GARDENS.

The temperatures can vary quite a bit from the center of the Salt Lake valley (South and West Jordan Gardens) to the benches (Millcreek and Holladay Gardens).

If you are able to help today, Thursday, or Friday, and get out to our So Jo B Garden at 11131 So. 2865 W. and pick any and all tomatoes and anything else you see, it would be greatly appreciated. Let me know before you go so I can keep you updated on the progress.

Take what you want and if you have extra, send it my way, here in Holladay, where we will get it distributed.

FALL GARDEN CLEANUP: EVERY SATURDAY IN OCTOBER - 1 - 3 PM

Check the garden calendar to see the update on which garden we are at each Saturday.
Check the Friday before, to get the most current news.

From 1 - 3 pm, every Saturday, we'll bring lunch for everyone and work together to pull ALL the plants out of the garden, put them in a big pile to be hauled away.  All the dripline needs to be carefully gathered up and all black plastic will be removed from the garden area as well.  Any rocks, milk cartons, wood pieces, etc. that were holding down the black plastic all need to be put in a pile away from the main garden area.

Our South Jordan Gardens will be tilled with a tractor this fall, so we can begin planting early in the spring.

If you and your family have never been involved with working throughout an entire growing cycle, you should come and work with us to learn what needs to be done before winter sets in.

Thursday, Aug. 2: Harvest Distribution in Holladay

Sheryl McGlochlin - Wednesday, August 01, 2012
We still need your help in the gardens - lots of harvesting and weeding to do nearly every day.
In the meantime, if you have helped us this year in any of the gardens and haven't picked up food yet, please come and get some!

Email, text or call me before coming to pick some up, anytime Thursday, Aug. 2nd, Holladay A Garden,, preferably in the morning, before 9 am when it's still cooler outside but anytime if fine if that doesn't work.

There is a nice assortment of produce right now so please let me know if you want some.

Don't go until you hear a confirmation from me, just to make sure there's still plenty left.

Look for the clip board next to the produce.  Sign in.  Bring your own bags.

Don't ring the door bell or anything, just sign in, take some food, and leave.

Right now there is no garden work at the Holladay A Garden.

We do need help in Holladay B Garden, however.

You can come later and help in that garden or any of our WEST side gardens, which are also very demanding right now... especially West Jordan and South Jordan A, B & C Gardens.

A lot of the produce you are eating at my home right now is coming out of our 3 South Jordan Gardens.

Thank you so much for helping us in any of our 14 gardens this year!

It is GREATLY appreciated!

I hope you enjoy this harvest!

Continue to watch this blog and the Garden Calendar to see where we need help the most.

There will be several fruit trees i.e. pear, etc. that need to be picked soon.

Sunday, July 8: A big thanks to ALL of you who keep moving our garden work forward!

Sheryl McGlochlin - Sunday, July 08, 2012

So many people, young and old, have spent a lot of time working in our 14 gardens especially this past month!  I can't thank you enough.  Garden work is hard work but you can literally see the fruits of your labors every week, which is SO rewarding.  You really are making a difference!!

Look at the Calendar Schedule.

I'll add more work dates this week, especially in the West Side gardens where we need the help the most.

If you are willing to work at a time that is best for you, please let me know since you really can work ANY daylight hours, Monday - Saturday, in any of the gardens, if I know about it a head of time, or the garden coordinator knows.

Food distribution will be happening Monday - Thursday especially, as well during the Calendar events.

Bagels

Artisan Bread

Help us pick apricots and you'll get some of those

Other produce are starting to come out of the gardens as well on a small scale right now, but those who work this week in these gardens will have access to this food first.

You are the only workers we have and we need you if we expect to eat any of our harvest this year!

June 18 - 23: West Jordan Garden, Work to do

Sheryl McGlochlin - Monday, June 18, 2012
A big thanks to all who came last week and helped in this garden.  Much was accomplished!

Work to do this week:

1. Put cages on tomato plants. Lori put a bunch of cages, from the shed, onto the grass next to plot and just outside the shed in back. There are more cages in shed that she couldn't get out.  Someone may need to go in and retrieve them, if needed.
2. Weed the back plot --- Use the hoe or the tool with 3/4 circle on front to gently uproot the weeds.
3. Weed around the back plot along where the grapes are -- bigger weeds may required shovel or hoe.
4. Hand water the melon plants in back plot with watering can
5. Hand water the rows with beans and carrots -- very gently so as not to disturb the seeds. Need to keep moist to germinate the seeds.
6. Rake leaves from side area near garbage cans
7. Prune rose bushes on side area near garbage cans
8. Get front patch of raspberries weeded -- may need to use pitch fork to get the grass up....

Contact Lori Schneider, the West Jordan Garden coordinator, or me, Sheryl McGlochlin, if you can come and work ANYTIME in this garden this week.  Contact one of us BEFORE working just to make sure we are both on the same page as to what you'll be doing.  We'll also be able to update you on work that has been accomplished from others throughout the week when you call.

Riverton Garden update: For those who are in this area, we need you!

Sheryl McGlochlin - Thursday, June 07, 2012
We had a very productive day today at the Riverton Garden. A BIG thank you to Laura and her boys for coming out this morning to help pull out the big weeds.

We got the garden composted, tilled, and furrowed and started laying the black plastic that will go over each row.  It was a lot of work but at the end of the day Norma, the homeowner said "I think I'll just stand here and look at those beautiful rows for a while tonight." She was SO grateful for all the work.

Next Riverton Group Work Date: Saturday, June 9, 8 - 9 am:

Stay longer if you like

Work to do:

Help us finish laying the black plastic and start to plant.  Starting at 8 am will be much cooler.

Call Aimee, Riverton Garden Coordinator

801-556-7857

when you are on your way Saturday, since she may be en route.

RSVP to her if you can come and help, even for a little while.

Bring the kids!

I bought some bubbles today. Saturday I'll try to remember to bring some balls. Norma brought out her sprinklers and let my kids run through them today when they were too hot and dusty to keep working. She is a WONDERFUL woman and REALLY apprecaites our work in the garden and the company.

Please give me a call if you have any questions.

Thanks again!!
