Tuesday, April 24: Easy Raking to do in South Jordan B Garden

Sheryl McGlochlin - Tuesday, April 24, 2012

South Jordan B Garden

ANYTIME this week, if you have a rake, go to the South Jordan B Garden and rake around the perimeter of the garden.  It is a larger garden so we could easily use a few people doing this.  It needs it really bad.

Help! We need 1 - 2 people to help with a festival Saturday, April 28

Sheryl McGlochlin - Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Healthy Living Festival

Saturday, April 28, 8 - 11 am

Location:  Hawthorn Academy (corner of  2200 W & 9000 S in So. Jordan, across from Mountain America Credit Union.)

Must be there by 7:45 am

We need 2 people to man our booth, talk with people, answer questions, and hand out fliers regarding our group.

Shelly will take care of all the set up/take down so you don't have to worry about carrying anything in or out.

Tuesday, April 24, Holladay Garden Work to do

Sheryl McGlochlin - Monday, April 23, 2012

We had so many great, hard workers helping us last Saturday in the pea plantation at Holladay B Garden.

We need a little more help putting more rocks and bricks on all the rows of black plastic mulch.

Wednesday is supposed to be windy and we need to make sure all of our hard work doesn't get blown away with the wind.

Laying all of this black plastic mulch is critical, especially in the Holladay B Garden since there are so many little "puncture weeds" that are starting to bloom.  These are deadly if you step on one of them.

Also, because we laid down so much black plastic mulch, we have created a very "water wise" garden and have also eliminated most of the weeding work which will save us hundreds of hours during the entire garden season!

Thank you to EVERYONE who helped on Saturday to do this!

Tuesday, April 24, South Jordan B work to do

Sheryl McGlochlin - Monday, April 23, 2012
Sue and Lorell got a lot of the perimeter cleaned up.  Thank you SO much.  Lorell got some of the branches hanging over the garden trimmed.  He will haul off the branches and other green stuff next Monday.

We still need your help!

Here are the latest chores:

  • If you are able to help us, there is still more clean up to do before we can plant in this garden.
  • Lorell has left bags there to put stuff in.
  • There are rocks that need to stacked.
  • There are smaller branches that need to be taken from the pile in the back into the stack to be hauled off.

Week of April 23 - 28 in South Jordan B Garden

Sheryl McGlochlin - Sunday, April 22, 2012

Tasks to be done:

  • Bring clippers and hand saws to continue cutting down plant life along the fence lines
  • Remove as much overgrowth as possible along fence lines.
  • Stack all 2' - 3' branches by the apple tree where a pile has been established
  • Any trash, i.e.old tires and other non-organic matter should be separated from organic matter and left in a pile for a dump run.
  •
  • We need someone with expertise to cut down a few tree limbs above the garden
  • Those with cordless weed-wackers - start cutting tall grass around the entire perimeter.
  • Rake up the grass cuttings and put them in the compost bins.

When to come:

You may work in the gardens ANYTIME, Monday through Saturday, daylight hours PROVIDING you follow these rules:

  • Read a blog post like this OR view a scheduled work date, so you know what is the most urgent work to do.
  • Contact the coordinator for the garden you want to work in BEFORE you go, so they know you are going there and know basically what you'll be working on.  They can also give you new insight into what needs to happen AND they can inform the next crew what has already been done, without always having to run over to the garden to see it in person.
  • If possible, report back to the coordinator via text, email, phone, etc. to let them know what you basically accomplished.
  • Keep track of your hours
  • The coordinator needs to keep track of who is working in their gardens each week.  They are required to report back to me with that information.  Those who are working in any of our gardens will be the first to receive harvest as it becomes available.

Friday, April 20, 1 - 5 pm, Holladay Garden help needed

Sheryl McGlochlin - Thursday, April 19, 2012

Anytime in the afternoon that you want to come and help, call, text, email or just show up at my home.  If you don't see me, call me on my cell:  801-278-5313.  We are finishing up with the weeding and have been laying black plastic mulch in all of the rows between the peas to cut WAY down on future weeding in this garden.  Come and help us finish this big project.  I won't have time to post it on my Garden Calendar, so hopefully you will read this and come!  Your help is MUCH appreciated!!

Wednesday, April 18, Garden work to do, Holladay Gardens

Sheryl McGlochlin - Tuesday, April 17, 2012

6 - 8 pm:

Come and work with me in both Holladay A & B Gardens.

Go to my home first, Holladay A Garden and look for the YELLOW CONE near the driveway for details on where to go if you don't see us immediately.  We'll either be in the A or B Gardens in Holladay, so we are NOT far!

Work to do:

  • Shovel the last of the beautiful compost dirt into 5 gal containers from the trailer.
  • Help us lay down black plastic mulch on the rows between peas where they have been weeded (so we don't have to weed in these rows anymore!)
  • Help us weed in the rows that have not been done yet.
  • Cut lettuce in the greenhouse that is ready.
  • Come and pick up bagels for your family.
  • And any other little jobs that need to be done.

Wednesday, April 18, Garden work to do, South Jordan A Garden

Sheryl McGlochlin - Tuesday, April 17, 2012
Lorell and Shelly invite you to come and help plant the rest of the potatoes, Wednesday, 4:30 pm at South Jordan A Garden.

Email me if you plan to attend and for sure come and learn how to plant potatoes!

Monday, April 9, Garden update...

Sheryl McGlochlin - Monday, April 09, 2012

Holladay Gardens:

8 - 10 am, Monday: We still have a lot of work to do in our Holladay gardens, mostly weed control around all of the hundreds of peas that are coming up.  Let me know if you are able to come to Holladay and help us anytime this week.  If you can't come on a scheduled time, email me and I'll show you what needs to be done.  I have the right tools to use so it will be fast and easy to do.

Once we get the weeds out between the rows of peas, we will quickly lay black plastic mulch down which will help us eliminate any further weeding in those areas. A very smart tip if you want to eliminate a ton of weeding in your garden!

1 - 3 pm: We're shooting a video today on How to Build your own inexpensive Hoophouse - You are invited to come and watch us film this or just wait for the video that will be posted soon.  Sorry, no children are invited to attend this event.   Call me for the specific address here in Holladay where we are shooting this.  801-278-5313

South Jordan A:  11371 So. 2865 W.

We worked hard last Saturday and got 8 long rows of crops planted.  Crops include: onions, radishes, turnips, lettuce, spinach, kohlrabi (from the cabbage family), carrots, and more is coming including potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, etc.

THREE Gardens will provide all of our early spring crops - Holladay A & B AND South Jordan A

All of our other gardens are being prepared to handle ALL of our summer crops which will all be planted by Mother's Day, (May 14th).  If you are able to help us with our Early Spring Gardens, plan to go to one of these THREE gardens.  We need you!
