What's happening in the gardens this week and work to do: 

Saturday, March 8, 1 - 3 PM

We'll do a quick tour of the Holladay A & B Gardens but spend MOST of our time in Holladay C Garden

NOTE:  If you can work in Holladay A & B Gardens anytime early next week (preferably Monday through Wednesday), during daylight hours, let me know.  You may be working on your own but if you'll come during our group Saturday work session, you'll see exactly what needs to be done next week.

Where to find us:

1 - 1:10 PM: Holladay A Garden:  2836 E Casto Lane (5060 South)

Meet me back near the greenhouse in my backyard. I'll show you how fast the garlic is coming up along with a lot of our early spring crops i.e. spinach, lettuce and other salad greens in the greenhouse. Not time to harvest yet. We need to gather some tools and supplies together then quickly head over to Holladay B Garden, about 2 minutes away. Most of the work that needs to be done in this garden will happen during the week next Monday - Wednesday.

1:15 - 1:30 PM:  Holladay B Garden, 2650 East Milo Way

I'll quickly show you what needs to be done in this garden and drop off some tools and equipment. Check out all the peas we planted a few weeks ago. Most of the work in this garden will also happen next week during the week.  We also need to load up a whole bunch of bricks from this garden and take over to the Holladay C Garden.

1:35 - 3 PM:  Holladay C Garden, 2225 East Fardown (near 6000 So. 2300 E. area)

Follow me over to this garden, approx. 5 minutes from the other 2 gardens. This is where we will spend the bulk of our time. 

Specific Work to be done in all 3 gardens: 

Holladay A

  • Fix hole in greenhouse roof - 
  • Set auto timer for drip line system in greenhouse - 
  • Light weeding in greenhouse:  32 rows
  • Light weeding in and around 60 ft. of garlic patch
  • Take Pitch Fork to B Garden
  • Take extra fence posts to B Garden
  • Take zip ties to B Garden
  • Take several seed packages of early spring veggies to C Garden
  • Take tools to loosen dirt in B Garden
  • Take fence post pounder to B Garden

Holladay B

  • Use pitch fork to tidy up compost pile
  • Move it away from peas
  • Many of the peas we planted a few weeks ago need to be covered again. Rain exposed them.
  • Fix a few fence posts w/ zip ties
  • Pound in a few fence posts to help secure fence

NOTE: If anyone has ANY extra fence posts or 4' rebar they can donate, let me know.

Load bricks into my white truck - to take to C Garden

Holladay C

  • Straighten black plastic that is currently in this garden
  • Secure it with bricks
  • Use action hoes in between black plastic to loosen dirt
  • Create furrows
  • Plant more spinach, lettuce, other salad greens

LUNCH SERVED AFTER 1:35 PM IN THIS GARDEN

NOTE:

Once this garden is planted, all 3 Holladay Gardens will have tossed salad greens and other early spring crops growing in them and will be harvested mostly in April, May and June.

All of the South Jordan Gardens will be planted in mid-May with lots of summer crops.

Other things we need help with next week:

Need help hauling horse manure...

a short distance from the Equestrian Park in South Jordan over to TWO of our South Jordan Gardens BEFORE we till these gardens.  If you have a TRUCK and can take a load and just dump it on the garden anytime during next week let me know.  We will spread it out all over the garden as a group. 

About the Wheeler Farm CSA Open House….

I need to get the banner and postcards back from you soon.  Bring them tomorrow if you are coming or let me know when I can get them.  Need them soon. 

Help needed with another upcoming Fair

Friday, March 21, 8 - 5 PM or any part of that day.  Held in Sandy, Utah at the Larry Miller Convention Center near I-15 and 9300 South.

  • Help members cut down and even eliminate processed foods from their diet
  • Save serious money on groceries by fixing meals made from garden produce
  • Teach your children how to eat and enjoy produce from our gardens
  • Help members receive plenty of food when they come and work with us in the gardens
  • Easily earn your $100 membership dues back from the money you save on groceries
  • Lose unwanted pounds by eating lots of fresh, wholesome, delicious food from our gardens

WORK TO DO:  JUNE 3 - 8  - SEE GARDEN CALENDAR for details on where to go & when

  • Pick LOTS of peas at BOTH East Side and South Jordan Pea Plantations!
  • Plant summer crops. June 8 - 15 are focused on planting summer crops.   
  • Lay black plastic in some gardens
  • Light weeding
  • Keep irrigation furrows clean and clear
  • Harvest spring crops i.e. salad greens, peas, etc.
  • Hill up potatoes
  • Till one East side garden
  • Install a drip line at our South Jordan E Garden

HELP NEEDED, starting Sat. June 8: FARMER'S MARKETS

  • Farmer's Markets are fun to work at
  • Great way to satisfy your garden hours
  • Currently we have SO much food that we have plenty of harvest for garden members and customers. 
  • Having financial difficulty paying $100 membership dues? You may be able to satisfy this obligation as well.  Talk to me.
  • Help needed as early as this Saturday, June 8. 
  • Email me ASAP
  • Work with one other adult.
  • Duties include: booth set up and take down, greet and talk to customers, hand out Garden postcards, sell produce, etc.


PEA PICKING PARTIES are happening ALL THIS WEEK!!  We need you! 

  • Peas are coming on strong and ready to pick in BOTH South Jordan and Holladay Pea Plantations!
  • If possible, come to a scheduled group work session first, so you know what to look for, how big they should be, and socialize with us if you like.
  • Remember, prior to working in any of our gardens, we ask you to RSVP me first and let me know that you plan to attend. 
  • There are PLENTY of peas for everyone, so come!.
  • You'll pick for other members AND take a bunch home for yourself as well.  
  • We especially need children helping to pick peas in Holladay Gardens
  • In So Jo Pea Plantation Garden, we discourage children from working in the peas since there are so many exposed drip lines that are so easy to step on or trip over.  It takes us a long time to get the drip lines back in place once you've disturbed it.
  • Please be careful where you walk and watch out for these fragile drip lines.

RECEIVE HARVEST, How to

  • Currently we have a LOT of Salad Greens available!  RSVP, stop by at your convenience, pick it up TODAY if possible, at my home in Holladay. 
  • Holladay address:  2836 E Casto Lane (5060 So.)
  • I keep it in a blue cooler, just outside my door.  
  • Text or email me in advance so I have plenty of food out there for you. 
  • Also, when you attend a Group Work Session, you will always receive produce. Make sure you RSVP so I bring plenty.
  • If you are working on your own in our gardens OR can't come to a group garden work session, let me know. 
  • Generally another garden member or one of my supervisors may be able to pick up produce for you.  Arrange to pick it up from them. 

SOUTH & WEST JORDAN WORK:

Our West Jordan Garden is now part of our 5 South Jordan Gardens, making a total of SIX. 
We are starting to work 4 evenings a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday) in these Gardens.
As often as possible, I will provide a pasta dinner on these nights for those who RSVP to work. 
Last Saturday night I prepared an Italian Pasta Dish and served our fresh salad greens with it.  SO delicious!  Even with only 8 people, in just a few hours we got a lot done in 3 gardens during that time.

STRAWBERRIES

are coming on in Holladay Gardens.  Help us pick peas and you'll get some strawberries.

1) EAST SIDE GARDENS - which consists of 6 gardens: 2 East Millcreek Gardens, 4 Holladay Gardens
2) SOUTH JORDAN GARDENS - which consists of 6 gardens:  1 West Jordan Garden, 5 South Jordan Gardens

All ages and abilities are welcome.

Garden experience and knowledge is helpful but not required.

How to get started: 

  • Contact Sheryl for instructions on how to start receiving full benefits!
  • Attend as a visitor a few times, if you prefer. 

As a visitor, come and take a quick tour or come ready to work with us for all or part of our group work session.

Work with others who have similar abilities, interests and passions.

After attending a few times, registration is required.  Struggling financially?  Payment plans are offered, if necessary. Contact Sheryl. See contact info at bottom of page.

Our nine gardens are located in Holladay, South Jordan and West Jordan.  Work in one location or all of them. It's up to you.


Contribute in a way that works best for you. 

Elderly members, for example, have been some of our best workers!  They move the work along as they sit on a chair and work in our gardens! 


Being in a garden is very therapeutic and working in one is even better!

"Work for Food" Community Garden Tour and Party!


Many have benefited from our gardens over the years.

Now, in our 6th year as a "working community garden" group, we are growing more crops, on more land than ever before.

We invite you to join us and get involved!

Save money on groceries, eat healthier, relieve stress and gain valuable gardening skills!

*Not a member?  No worries!  Come, get acquainted with us for free!

Work a few times in our gardens to see if this is right for you.

After attending two times, register as an official garden member and receive these benefits year round!

Work to do: 

December through February:

12 of our 14 gardens are closed EXCEPT two large winter gardens in Holladay.

Plenty of work needs to be done in both gardens during these months.

Our Holladay gardens are located a few houses from each other, approx. 5000 So. 3000 E. in Holladay,  84117.

They are called: Holladay A and Holladay B.

Holladay A:

  • My home and headquarters for all the gardens
  • Features a 1200 sq ft. high tunnel cold frame greenhouse
  • Other crops grow outside the greenhouse as well


Holladay B Garden

  • Located approx. 5 homes east from Holladay A Garden, on the same street.  
  • Known as the Pea Plantation (During winter and early spring months), 1,000 feet of peas are planted in February in this garden. 
  • Peas are harvested in early May. 
  • Additional crops are planted after the peas have been harvested.

NOTE:   Members may work on their own, anytime during the week except Sunday, as often as they like IF...

  • they have attended at least one group date that is posted on the calendar. This helps me get better acquainted with you and allows you to learn what needs to be done and how to do it.
  • they have RSVP'd to let me know when they plan to work in a garden
  • Email, text, or leave a phone message at: 801-278-5313
  • Inform me of any limitations you have.
  • You are never required to do any work you don't feel comfortable with.
Generally there's a variety of work to do, so come and check it out!


What to bring: 

  • Garden gloves
  • Water bottle
  • Dress in weather appropriate clothing
  • Wear clothes/shoes that can get dirty

Type of food you'll receive: 

  • Produce - Enjoy eating any crops ready to harvest
  • Breads or baked goods -  Local business trade baked goods with us (Great Harvest Bread, Riches Bagels, etc.)
  • Soup! Hot, delicious, healthy, homemade, hearty Soup!  I love cooking soups for anyone who helps us in the gardens, made from harvest picked from our own gardens! 

  • Outside garden work is weather dependent.
  • Greenhouse garden work is not weather dependent: Planting or other work may be done regardless of the weather.

SL County-Farmer Showcase Local Urban Farm

Thayne Tagge is my very good friend, neighbor and mentor. Julie is a good friend and my neighbor.  She works for the city of Salt Lake.  Check out the amazing farm in Holladay that Thayne has cultivated from land that was leased to him by Salt Lake County.

 
 
Due to public demand, Salt Lake Countys Urban Farming program is teaming up with local farmeThayne Tagge of Tagges Famous Fruit and Veggies, to showcase a local urban farm.
 
The public is invited to an open house Saturday afternoon for a complete tour. Tagge will share information on how to purchase fresh produce and introduce two innovative farming operations: a solar powered drip irrigation system, which uses only a fraction of the water typically used to grow crops, and the use of black plastic mulch to increase production yields.
 
Other participants include Wasatch Community Gardens and Slow Food Utah. Wasatch Community Gardens and Salt Lake Countys public-private partnership has contributed to the development of community gardens in County parks. Slow Food Utah is an organization that promotes the buy local” movement, small independent farms, and local producers and retailers.
